The Brief

Every project that goes well was decided before it began. The Brief is the professional discipline of turning a first conversation into a document the whole project answers to — reading what a client says, hearing what they actually need, and separating the non-negotiable from the merely nice. You learn to translate feeling into requirement, name the constraints early, and write a brief that stays the project's governing authority from first sketch to final sign-off. It is the first move every professional makes, and the one most rooms are built without.

The Mood Board

A professional mood board is not a wall of images you like — it is a decision-making tool, a communication instrument, and a visual contract you can hold a project to. Most boards collect inspiration; a working board directs it. This course teaches you to build one from scratch: choosing with intention, resolving a direction before the room is furnished, and using the board to keep every later decision honest. You leave able to make a board that argues for a scheme and settles disagreements — not one that simply decorates a wall.

The Color System

Color rarely goes wrong for want of taste — it goes wrong for want of method. This course gives you a repeatable system for building a palette from any starting constraint, then specifying it correctly across paint, tile, stone, and fabric, where the same color behaves differently in each. You learn to predict how light and material will shift a shade before it reaches the wall, and to communicate color decisions with the precision a supplier can act on. Every method arrives through a real decision you'll face in practice.

The Floor Plan

A plan that doesn't work rarely fails for lack of creativity — it fails for lack of method. This course gives you the complete professional process for taking a space from raw site to a fully annotated floor plan: analyzing what exists, resolving circulation so a room flows the way it's lived in, and drawing it to a standard others can build from. Every step is the one a working designer actually takes, in the order they take it. You leave able to plan a space on paper before committing a single wall.

The Ventilation

Ventilation is the system that decides whether every other decision in a building survives. A flawless kitchen or a calm bedroom means little if the air isn't continuously renewed and held at the right moisture — damp settles, mold takes hold, finishes fail early, and the people inside breathe air that works against them. These are rarely equipment failures; they are decisions made by default, or never made at all. This course teaches a renovation-first method for treating air as a primary design system: understand the science of moisture, survey what exists, choose a strategy, size it room by room, then prove it works and document it.

The Lighting

Light is the only material in an interior you cannot touch — and the one that decides how every other material reads. The most carefully chosen stone, timber, and paint can be made right or wrong by the light that falls on them. Lighting rarely fails at the fixture; it fails when the decisions are made in the wrong order, or never made at all. This course teaches you to design light as a system: understand output, temperature, color rendering, and glare; read the daylight and the wiring before you draw; compose the layers; resolve the controls; and document a scheme an electrician can install and a client can sign off.

The Utility Room

The utility room is the hardest-working and least celebrated space in the house — it washes, dries, cleans, sorts, stores, and hides the boiler and the meters, usually in the smallest room going. It rarely fails because it looks wrong; it fails because the services and the workflow were never planned. This course teaches a systems-first method for the working house: survey the existing services, build a brief from what the household actually does, and resolve water, power, ventilation, and heat before a fitting is placed. You leave able to plan around real workflow and specify surfaces built to be worked hard — from a villa room to an apartment cupboard.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is the most technically demanding room in a home — water, waste, gas, electricity, ventilation, heat, moisture, and structural load all living inside one finished space. Its failures are rarely about looks; they are decisions made in the wrong order. This course teaches a renovation-first method for taking a kitchen from existing conditions to a contractor-ready specification: survey the space, write the cooking brief, and resolve the systems — plumbing, ventilation, electrical, gas, heated floors — before any cabinetry is drawn. You then plan the layout against those resolved systems and specify surfaces, light, and hardware as one coordinated material story, documented to a standard a contractor can price and build.

The Bathroom

The bathroom is the most technically constrained room in a home — a managed interaction between water, the human body, and the building that holds them. It leaves no room for a layout that only half-works. This course teaches the complete method for designing bathrooms that perform: read the room as a system, specify ergonomic clearances for every fixture, work the constraints of drainage, supply, waterproofing, ventilation, and electrical zones, and resolve a real layout before finishing it in materials and light chosen for bathroom-specific wear. You leave with a complete annotated layout and a full specification kit you can hand to a contractor.

The Bedroom

The bedroom is the room people spend a third of their life inside, and the one most often under-designed — treated as a furniture-arrangement problem when it is really a managed environment for the body's shift between waking and sleep. This course teaches a method for designing the bedroom as a restorative system, governed by three forces held in balance: rest, the body, and the room. You learn to design from physiological function rather than styling defaults, and leave with a complete layout, a body-state specification, a lighting and atmosphere scheme, and the surfaces and textiles to support real rest.

The Living Area

The living area is the only room defined not by what it contains but by how much it must do at once — living room, dining room, home office, and guest room, sometimes all in one space. Its failures are rarely about taste; they are rooms furnished before they were planned, designed for a single photograph instead of a full day of living. This course teaches a function-first method for every shared and multipurpose space: read how the household actually lives, zone the space with or without walls, and furnish for coexistence through smart, dual-use pieces. You leave able to make one room serve several roles — from a small apartment to a generous villa.

The Entry

The entry is the first space anyone experiences and the last they pass through — the home's handshake, where the impression forms in seconds. Yet it is rarely designed at all; it is the space left over by the door, and it shows in every arrival. This course teaches a threshold-first method for designing that crossing and the welcome it offers: read how people arrive and leave, design the transition from outside to in, and plan storage and the arrival sequence for everything a person wears and carries. You leave able to specify surfaces built for the home's busiest traffic and document the room for a contractor — from a grand hall to a single apartment entry.
